Day 12! Lots of memories from my last year at Poplar Glade. Our teacher Mr.Berry did a great running program and I got to like running so much I still go jogging every once in a while. Another time we climbed Fox Mountain to mess around with the Giant Grad 86 sign, we got caught. So tonight I'll go for a run to remember. Happy Easter!
Lucky 13 and today I'm remembering grade 8. ASJS. Met and made many friends through volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track. Mike Bullock and I made spoons in woodwork and sanded them for about 3 weeks. Parmar and his van. Travis and Dave going to the first Dance. Eating lunch with Greg and Am on a bench by the gym. We'd go to the open gym every morning to shoot hoops! Thanks Clark and Rollie for being there every day! And Braces. I don't think I smiled the whole year. So today I have access to a gym so I will go and be a gym rat for a while and shoot some hoops.
Number 14 and now I remember my grade 9 year! Braces came off and smile came out. Which led to my first kiss! It was the end of lunch and we had done many laps of school hallways holding hands. The bell went and we looked at each other. We leaned in. Sadly, we both closed our eyes and our first kiss missed! From those humble beginnings I now have five kids! Tonights celebration will be fun. Kissing bandit returns!
No.15 and Grade Ten. So much happened that year. Bball was great! The Retreat. Coaching grade eights. Entering the workforce.(Not counting the paper route) I was cleanup shift at the Mill. Nepotism thrived back then! Most of the shift had parents working there. Learning to drive. So my remembrance today I'll go for a drive and try to remember some driving school tips. Cheers, Dan
Day 16- the big move to senior high school. I will go back to food with this one. Oh the freedom of having friends with cars. Most lunches we would go somewhere to eat. McDonalds was always popular. We also enjoyed Pizza Hut. I think we ate at every restaurant in town. Calling shot-gun as we left. Another favourite was Fries with Gravy in the Caf. Years later I was teaching at Columneetza and got to eat lunch in the staff room. This was also the year we met many new friends from the other high school -WLJS. For years afterwards we would split into teams by the rule of AS vs. WL. Then we grew up. To honor those days of eating whatever we wanted for lunch without worrying about the calorie count or sodium percentage I will go out to a local restaurant and enjoy something deepfried! Cheers,
Dan
17- I think I'll have to do two today. So much happened. The first one won't be as happy but still important to reflect on as these were life-changing events. This year I lost my innocence(not what you are think Tom Dell, that's another list) This year I was introduced to losing people I loved. Over the summer my maternal grandparents died. First my grandmother Ruth and then her husband Dave. Later, my dear friend, soccer buddy, sleep-over pal, and basically the funnest guy to be around, Greg died. The school year was incredible and lots of fun times but something was missing. Then at the end of the school year my other grandfather Ray passed away. That was a hard funeral. So today's post has me thinking about death, which leads to thinking about life. So my celebration today will be simple, I'm going to get out of my office as soon as I can today and go spend some time with my kids. And give them a few extra hugs. Dan
17-part
two - What a year grade 12 was. We had a great soccer team and won our
zone with style. At the provincials we played well and played against a
local team to make up for a team that disqualified. It was a friendly
game so I got to play up front instead of goal. On a partial breakaway I
wasn't fast enough and a defender broke my knee. So I missed much of
the basketball season and got to crutch
around the school. I met and made lots of friends, New Year's at
Rodger's was a blast. I spent lots of time with my girlfriend and Barry
Sale had to have talk with me about PDA's! Wade and Rachann picked me up
to drive to school even though I was only a 10 minute walk. I remember
dress-nice Wednesday's and the halloween dance at club 27! Dry Grad was a
great night and who could forget Am Johal on the mic singing Elvis
songs! Prepping for provincial finals and planning our lives. Travis,
Dave and I became roommates in Kamloops to go to UCC. Kids today would
say the housewarming was epic. Ha. Have a great day, thanks for the
memories!
